THE 86th ACADEMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS LIST
Segala keriuhan dari awards season tahun ini segera mencapai puncaknya dengan telah diumumkannya deretan penghuni nominasi Academy Award yang ke-86 oleh bintang utama dari Rush dan Thor: The Dark World, Chris Hemsworth, yang mendampingi ketua anyar dari Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Cheryl Boone Isaacs pada 16 Januari 2014. Seperti yang telah banyak diprediksi oleh berbagai kalangan sebelumnya, American Hustle garapan David O. Russell memborong nominasi terbanyak dengan menghiasi 10 kategori, termasuk menempati seluruh kategori di departemen akting, seperti yang dilakukan oleh Silver Linings Playbook tahun lalu. Bersaing ketat dengan American Hustle adalah Gravity yang sama-sama menorehkan 10 nominasi, meliputi beberapa kategori utama seperti Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Original Score dan Best Editing.
Sementara itu, kontender kuat dari kedua film tersebut pada musim penghargaan ini, 12 Years a Slave, menguntit tepat di belakang dengan 9 nominasi. Turut memanaskan persaingan dengan pengumpulan nominasi yang tak kalah banyaknya (6 nominasi) adalah Captain Phillips, Nebraska, dan Dallas Buyers Club. Namun, tentu saja, seperti yang sudah-sudah, Oscars pun memberi kehebohan di kalangan penikmat dan pengamat film dengan melakukan ‘snubs’ kepada beberapa nama yang banyak diunggulkan semacam Daniel Bruhl (Rush), Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks), Robert Redford (All is Lost), The Coen Brothers (Inside Llewyn Lewis), dan Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips). Turut menghilang dari daftar adalah film-film seperti Blackfish, Pacific Rim, dan Rush. Yang mengejutkan, AMPAS rupanya masih memberi cinta untuk Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, The Lone Ranger, dan film-yang-nyaris-tak-seorang-pun-pernah-mendengarnya, Alone, Yet Not Alone. The Grandmaster milik Wong Kar-wai meski gagal menembus Best Foreign Language mewakili Hong Kong, masih memeroleh kehormatan dengan 2 nominasi.
