Persaingan ketat 12 Years a Slave dan American Hustle yang sama-sama diganjar nominasi terbanyak dengan 7 kategori, pada akhirnya dimenangkan oleh American Hustle yang menggenggam 3 piala meliputi Best Motion Picture dan Best Actress untuk Amy Adams (Akhirnya!) di wilayah Comedy or Musical serta Best Supporting Actress untuk Jennifer Lawrence. Sementara 12 Years of Slave nyaris saja tidak memeroleh cinta dari Hollywood Foreign Press Association andaikan film garapan Steve McQueen tersebut tak diganjar Best Motion Picture in Drama. Kejutan dari acara penghargaan yang digelar di Beverly Hilton Hotel, California, tersebut datang dari Dallas Buyers Club yang tidak disangka-sangka mampu menghadang unggulan lain sebagai peraih piala terbanyak kedua setelah American Hustle. Merebut piala untuk Matthew McConaughey di Best Actor (Drama) dan Jared Leto di Best Supporting Actor, Dallas Buyers Club hanya menyisakan masing-masing 1 piala bagi Gravity, Blue Jasmine, Her, The Wolf of Wall Street, Frozen, All is Lost, dan Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
